Quick Question: How comfortable are we in giving each other feedback?

Quick Question

Here is today's quick question for you...How comfortable are we in giving each other feedback?

Ask it when you're...

  1. Reflecting on team maturity - This question can help assess how well your team connects and whether any unsaid ‘elephants’ could hinder your progress.

  2. Designing your team offsite - It can be helpful to push your team into areas of discomfort, but dangerous to go too far too soon. This question can help you establish a baseline.

  3. Developing your L&D plan  - Perhaps your team could use some training on how to deliver (and receive) feedback more effectively. If that’s the case, I’d love to help. You can email me here.

Listen for...

Try to listen for:

  • Hesitation - if your team seem hesitant to share feedback, it may be a sign that you need to encourage them or invest in developing their skills and confidence.

  • Escalation - If they are bringing feedback to you (rather than the intended recipient) it’s a sure sign you’ve got a problem somewhere.

  • Feedback - That’s not an error. Listen for feedback on feedback. If someone says, ‘Amanda shared with me some ways I could improve my presence in the Exec meeting, and it was really helpful’, you know you’re on a winner.

Sometimes, the greatest value comes from the one extra question you take the time to ask.

In this situation, you could try…

  • When was the last time you received positive feedback from a peer?

  • What was the most helpful feedback you received this month?

  • When was the last time you asked a peer for feedback?
