Quick Question: How clear is our purpose?

Quick Question

Here is today's quick question for you...How clear is our purpose?

Ask it when you're...

  1. Starting a new venture  - Purpose is your magnet to attract investors, customers and team members. It’s often the reason people join you - and the reason why they stay, even when things aren’t going so well.

  2. Making decisions - Purpose forms the roots from which your company grows. It creates guardrails for your biggest and your smallest decisions.

  3. Sensing confusion or tension within your team  - If your purpose isn’t precise, aspirational, credible and perceived as important, your team will find it tough to align their behaviours with the company values.

Listen for...

Try asking someone independent to ask your team members to articulate your purpose.

Try to listen for:

  • Clarity + Consistency -  this will tell you whether your message has landed.

  • Pride - this will tell you how connected they feel to the purpose

  • Progress  - this will tell you if you have a sense of momentum in the team.

This question helps identify whether each member understands how their role links to the overall work of the team and the company.

Follow up with...

Sometimes, the greatest value comes from the one extra question you take the time to ask.

In this situation, you could try…

  • How did your work this week move the needle on something that truly matters?

  • If you had 30 seconds to explain what we do, what would you say?

  • What is the most common thing our customers misunderstand about our team?
